The Process of Creating My Profile Picture

Writer's picture: ArtyRaeArtyRae

Hey everyone. So this week I thought I'd try something new and cover the same thing in both my YouTube video and my Blog Post and put them up on the same day. I didn't do that great of a job explaining that in the video but thanks if you came from there!

If not, check it out here! https://youtu.be/Q7ZI4rX9V_Y

So if you haven't watch the video or read the title I'm going to be talking about the creative process and meaning behind my profile picture. (And its remake.) I'll hopefully be linking a poll at the end of the post to a poll of whether or not I should keep the old profile picture or change it to the new one.

So the piece I use for my profile picture I named LilyLaila because of the two characters shown. Two girls with the same face, the only way to tell them apart is the color of their hair and eyes. Composition wise I used the hush hand signal to split the face, but I also used it to imply a deeper meaning within the two characters. Without spoilers for the story I hope to publish someday Lily and Laila never meet but they are interconnected. This connection sadly brings many hardships and difficult secrets- hence the hushing.

Why did this become my profile picture in the first place? To be honest I wasn't expecting much of this piece when I made it, which I guess was how it turned out so well. Isn't it interesting how when we try to make a profile picture it doesn't turn out but something I did for fun and practice turned out to be perfect for it? I chose it because it got the best response I've ever had on Instagram, and it made me appreciate how it turned out. I originally made the piece to try some new alcohol markers alongside my copic markers. I'm really happy something with my characters was what became my icon, since they really mean a lot to me. I know that sounded cheesy but they really do. In more than one way. I know them like real people, as do all natural born fan girls, and I know how they are my future. They are what I want to publish.

But why did I redraw it if it already had so many compliments? Simple, I want to show I've improved since. That's why you should try remaking your old art, especially something you're proud of. I actually found it a lot harder to "fix" something I didn't think was broken then when I do the same practice on a piece I didn't like. The problem is I don't know if I should change the original. Since your my viewer I think it'd be great to hear your opinion on that, since I can't read minds.
