Today I'm going to be answering some questions I created for myself. I've realized that I have trouble keeping up my practice when I don't have school going on. I'm not one hundred percent sure why this is, it may have something to do with how much I draw in class, but it hurts my motivation when I notice how little I've gotten done. In response to that I decided to evaluate myself, feel free to answer the questions yourself! I'd love to hear about it in the comments! (I'll include a blank copy at the bottom of the post if you'd prefer that.)
When do I draw? When can't I?
I find myself drawing the most consistently in my classes. This could be any class, art related or not, since it can help me stay focused on the lecture. The only downfall of this habit is that I don't draw things that require reference and therefore nothing is very challenging. I also do good amount of work for my YouTube videos, if I'm going to make a piece I might as well record it and kill two birds with one stone.
I have trouble starting to draw when I know I'm about to go somewhere afterwords, since I don't want to get really involved to just have to leave. I also have trouble staying focused if I'm uncomfortable or there are to many distractions. (Distractions are hard to avoid when your bedroom is your office.)
What do I draw?
95 percent of what I draw are my own characters. I own them and I enjoy seeing my skill improve through how much closer they've gotten to what I see in my head. Since I write them as well this allows me to physically see and connect to the character I am trying to nail down.
Why do I draw?
Very connected to above, I started to draw because I love comics and characters. The world building aspects that opened to me by learning to draw built on something I already enjoyed. My dream is to create a story that readers can connect to and love as much as I love DC.
When can I not focus? When can I?
These are complicated questions, since I want to answer my room for both of them. As mentioned earlier it can be hard to focus sometimes with so much going on in the space I use as an office, but as for many of us my bedroom is my favorite hangout. (For lack of a better term.) While all my electronics, comics, and bed are very distracting, I'm occasionally able to get into a work flow in the privacy of my bedroom that's hard in any public space.
In conclusion it seems that I need to schedule specific drawing practice time. With it being separate from the rest of the drawing time I many not feel like I'm wasting my work time. I'm also going to put more time into putting aside reference photos I might be able to use for practice and final pieces. I also need to connect my practice to my original characters, as the more I care about what I'm drawing the more likely I am to put effort into it and finish. (Imagine that!)
