How to make a sketchbook seem natural

Writer's picture: ArtyRaeArtyRae

Keeping up with a sketchbook is a difficult task for many artist, but I've never really had the issue. When I started drawing I only drew in sketchbooks, when many other people start on loose pieces of paper. Making it feel natural can seem hard, but here are some tips to help:)

Say it with me. YOUR SKETCHBOOK DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PERFECT. Sketchbooks are meant to be personal practice. While many of us do share our pages on line we don't have to since they are not completed illustrations. The finished work is where you need to be a perfectionist. Sketchbooks are where you are supposed to be able to let loose and have fun. This is a great way to try new things and develop new techniques, which is more difficult when you put pressure on yourself to be perfect. Like with everything you need to practice before you can use it officially.

I think what helped me the most was that I made it normal. By making it something I did often and for fun it was never a big deal. Because it's not stressful you end up just drawing what makes you happy, which helps you continue to do it often. Maybe you enjoy doing some rough sketching and not just neat finished work- this is the perfect place to let loose and work on a "guilty pleasure".

Sorry for missing last weeks post and this one being so short. I was busy with my summer class and it's hard to get back into the swing of things<3
